Highlights from the General Session

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending NAR Conference and Expo General Session. What an amazing 2.5 hours filled with so much excitement that it was palpable when you entered the room. Walking through the double doors to uplifting music while you found your way to the seat, you saw REALTORS® hugging, taking pictures, and dancing along with excitement as they prepared for the General Session with General Powell. Attending General Session is one of the events that I look forward to every year! Not only do we have top notch speakers, I am always in awe with the amount of international real estate agents that attend our conference. Yesterday they mentioned over 1,200 international agents in attendance representing over 60 countries!

The energy continues and sometimes the waterworks begin when REALTOR® Magazine gives their Good Neighbor Awards to five deserving REALTORS®. To see the ways my fellow REALTORS® are touching so many lives with their volunteering efforts is always inspiring. The individuals are true heroes, and if you want to get involved in any of their organizations or to learn more about these five winners, check out the 2016 Good Neighbor Award – Web Choice Winner.

President Tom Salomone reflected on the past eight years and made sure to express that “Proud” was the way we should feel to come from 2008 when the market was starting its downward spiral to where we are today—an estimated $5.3 million in home sales and a membership count of 1.16 million. Partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America was part of President Salomone’s three-year commitment, and if your association isn’t currently connected with your local Boys and Girls Club check out their website or call your local chapter to see how you can volunteer and get involved.

General Colin Powell joined us for the last 45 minutes of yesterday’s General Session and provided great stories on leadership, discussed his life as an immigrant’s son, talked about the first home his family purchased, military housing throughout his career, and the impact of investing in the youth. He spoke of so many amazing things I wish I could share it all with you but a few things that really stood out were the passion he has for our country and the youth. He shared with us a personal story of his involvement in America’s Promise and the 5 Promises they created. I would like to share them with you and please go to the website, America’s Promise & the 5 Promises, to get more information.

America’s Promise & the 5 Promises

  1. Caring Adults: Create a tribe within these communities so kids can feel loved.
  2. Safe Places: environments that support and encourage discovery and play without fear of harm
  3. A Healthy Start
  4. Effective Education
  5. Opportunities to Give Back

General Colin Powell was a great cap off to a great day of meetings. Overall the General Session was so full of energy and motivation that I can’t wait to get home and see where I can get more involved.

Believing that being involved is the best way to succeed, Crystal began her leadership path only two years in the business by being nominated and elected to serve on the board as a director.
