The Young Professionals Networking Reception is an evening of celebrations for all YPNers. It’s not only the night our annual “Network of the Year” awards are presented, but it’s also a chance to see the growing strength behind the YPN movement. I love being in the room with fellow YPN members and alum I’ve met over the years and hearing about their latest accomplishments. Many are newly minted leaders of local, state, or national committees and boards. Several have become presidents of their city’s Board of REALTORS®, and in 2017, the National Association of REALTORS® will see their first NAR president who is a YPN Alum, Elizabeth Mendenhall!!
Brokers are wise to guide their agents to the YPN events and encourage them to get involved with the various committees. Young Professional Networking events (local, state, and national) are often the first place those new to the business land when looking to meet their peers, increase their referral networks, and learn about the industry from other’s experience. This feeling of belonging, regardless of your brokerage, helps retain more agents and affiliates in the business according to first hand accounts of been gathering. In an industry that’s eager to attract the next generation of talent, this shouldn’t go unnoticed.
Those wanting their first taste of leadership should run for their local, state, or national YPN board. These boards will help you understand the structure, organization, commitment, and decision processes that are vital for leaders. Many networks offer scholarship opportunities to Leadership Academy, State and National Conference, and for the YPN Leadership Retreat. Having a YPN Board position on your resume or REALTOR® profile when applying for Board of REALTORS® positions shows that you have dedicated yourself to improving your leadership skills.
